Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is a low-slump concrete pavement placed with paving equipment and compacted with vibratory rollers. The construction sequence is coordinated so that material production, delivery, placement and compaction keep pace with one another. The exact plan depends on project size, weather, access, mix requirements and site conditions.
1. Prepare the site and base
Before paving, the team reviews grades, drainage, subgrade and base conditions, utilities, tie-ins and access. The foundation is prepared to meet the project specifications. Accurate grading matters: pavement elevations need to connect to existing surfaces and direct water as intended.
2. Coordinate mix production and delivery
RCC mixture proportions are established for the design requirements and materials. On-site production and hauling are planned around placement rates and site logistics. The project team manages consistency, supply and traffic so the paving operation can proceed in a controlled sequence.
3. Place and compact the RCC
Paving equipment spreads the low-slump concrete to the required width and depth. Rollers then compact it to achieve the specified density and surface. The paving crew coordinates placement and compaction timing, edges, tie-ins and construction joints according to the approved project plan.
4. Protect and cure the finished pavement
After compaction, curing and protection follow the project specifications. Saw-cut joints may be used as required by the design. The owner and contractor should agree on access limits, inspection, testing and the criteria for returning the surface to service.
What to ask before work begins
- What preparation, testing and acceptance criteria are in the contract documents?
- How will deliveries, equipment access and adjacent operations be coordinated?
- What weather conditions may affect placement or curing?
- Who approves inspection results and reopening to traffic?
