Grain storage pavement is part of a larger operating system. The pad, pile footprint, unloading area, conveyors, truck paths and runoff plan need to work together. Roller compacted concrete is one option for hard-surfaced agricultural areas; the right pavement design depends on the site, equipment and intended use.

Define storage and handling zones

Start with a scaled plan showing the anticipated storage footprint, pile boundaries, reclaim equipment, conveyors, truck turning paths and loading positions. Account for the movement of grain during both placement and removal. Routes that appear open on a basic site plan may become constrained when piles, equipment and seasonal traffic are present.

Evaluate loads and the foundation

Provide the design team with expected truck and equipment types, axle loads, traffic frequency and any concentrated or stationary loads. Share available geotechnical information and describe existing soil, fill, drainage and prior pavement conditions. A pavement section should be based on site investigation and design requirements, not copied from another grain site without review.

Plan grades and water management

Grain storage areas need deliberate surface grades and a clear approach for runoff. Identify where water can collect, how it will leave the paved area and what site features receive the flow. Tie the pavement grading to existing drainage and applicable environmental or local requirements. Coordinate transitions at the pad perimeter so that access and drainage work together.

Think about future operation

Consider whether the site may add storage, change conveyor positions or accommodate different trucks. Identify buried utilities and planned services before construction. If the facility must remain in operation, discuss staging, temporary access and harvest-season timing early with the paving team.

Storage capacity, pavement design and drainage are site-specific. Confirm assumptions and design details with the project's qualified engineering and agricultural professionals.
